BODYHACKER Pre-workout Inception

BODYHACKER Pre-workout started off as just two ingredients in software engineer James Wansley’s kitchen in 2009. As a 34 year old mixed martial arts and jiu jitsu competitor, James turned to supplements as a way to keep up with the 20 year olds he trained with and competed against. After trying many of the pre-workouts on the market, James decided to start from scratch on his own.  The initial two ingredients of l-arginine and l-ornithine came from James’ friend and supplement enthusiast Robert Coffey.

James approached finding the right formula to enhance physical potential the same way he’d approached several software problems in his career. He broke the body into smaller parts, namely the three main areas he needed to enhance in order to achieve maximum physical output; respiratory, cardiovascular and muscular.

During a two year stent of research, trial and error with himself, friends, teammates and co-workers as test subjects, James identified the individual ingredients that not only worked, but worked together. To ensure the formula was safe, James took it one step further and required that each ingredient satisfy the following requirements. Each ingredient had to be:

  • Minimally invasive
  • Highly absorbed
  • Continued use

As James transition from mixed martial arts and jiu jitsu to triathlons then to CrossFit and to obstacle course racing, he made tweaks to the formula to ensure it gave athletes in these sports what they need to train and compete. Athletes in these sports gave their feedback along the way.  By early 2012, the formula for BODYHACKER Pre-workout v1.0 was complete.

By August of 2012, it was getting hard for James to keep up with local demand. The Wansley kitchen often resembled an episode of Breaking Bad. James would leave baggies of his pre-workout in his mailbox for friends to swing by an pick up. When these friends would neglect to pick up the pre-workout, James would find the baggie of suspicious-looking brown powder below the mail delivered that day.  This did not look good.

He and his wife, Leah, a marketing strategist and graphic designer, decided to produce the formula in bulk and share it with the world. Leah and James formed Hardcore Hybrid, LLC as co-CEOs.  They decided on the name BODYHACKER as a tribute to how the formula was engineered.  James and Leah found a GMP certified lab in the US that had access to the same high-quality ingredients that they had been using in the formula. While the formula was in production, Leah designed the website, packaging and information materials. In June of 2013, BODYHACKER v1.0 was officially released to the public and received a great response from a variety of athletes.  James and Leah soon formally acquired a trademarked the BODYHACKER brand.

Following the engineer’s mindset of continually improving a product, today’s BODYHACKER Pre-workout v2.0 takes the core formula to the next level. It is 100% naturally flavored and sweetened and even more effective than v1.0. BODYHACKER Pre-workout v2.0 is sold on online at and, and you can find BODYHACKER Pre-workout v2.0 as the endurance pre-workout of choice in several gyms and retailers.

BODYHACKER Pre-workout v2.0 was engineered, not for profit, but for optimal athletic performance and safe long-term use. Thank you for reading our story and allowing us to be a part of your journey.
